What Is The Role Of The RV Dealer?

By , June 18, 2010

Buyers are a bit wary after the recession and rightfully so. If they are going to make an investment, they want to be sure it’s something that will be of use to them no matter what happens in the market. As people are starting to buy RVs again, many people are asking where RV Dealer loyalties lie. Are they pushing a sale so they can move a unit, or are they really interested in making sure their customers have the right product for them – a product that is in a specified price range and has all the amenities the buyer needs.

Customers drive almost every business. Customer needs drive the types of RVs and motorhomes that are made. For example, manufacturers are now designing lightweight travel trailers and more fuel-efficient models of RVs in response to customer demand. Customers have quite a bit of pull with the RV Industry whether or not they know it. Therefore, dealerships that respond only to manufacturers needs and pushing higher end sales are going to alienate the very people they need to survive.

Dealers do have a need to sell vehicles. If they don’t sell, they don’t make money and they are out of business. However, keeping customers happy keeps them coming back. Next time they may buy a more expensive model, or they may buy another new RV. If a customer wasn’t satisfied the first time, they won’t be back.

The recession weeded out a lot of RV dealers that didn’t understand their customer’s needs and only wanted to make a quick buck. When looking for an RV dealer, look to companies that have been around for twenty or more years. There’s probably a reason they’ve been in business so long. Companies who have employees that have stuck around also speak to the quality of the dealership.

RV companies that have been around for decades are also finding ways to bond with buyers and potential buyers. By hosting concerts, car rallies and BBQs, RV enthusiasts have a place to convene and a way to talk with other RV lovers. Setting up a community of like-minded people provides the dealer with a lot of information like what’s working and what isn’t with models, what really gets people excited about RVing and what types of trips they are taking. All this helps RV dealerships gear their inventory towards what their consumer wants.

Because some companies have realized on-line advertising will greatly expand their customer base, they are offering incentives for out of town buyers, such as Fly-and-Drive programs. With Fly-and-Drive the company purchases a plane ticket for two and offers transportation to people who have purchased an RV from them.

The goal of any successful company is to see their buyers come back to them, whether they are buying a new vehicle, or selling a used one. It’s repeat business that lets companies stay around year after year. By making the customer the priority, every one wins.

Creating the best experience they can is going to spread the word about the dealership and soon they’ll be so busy they won’t have time to think about who they are supposed to be pleasing, they’ll be doing it automatically and creating a strong customer base for the future.
