The Most Fuel Efficient Cars in the World

By , May 31, 2011

People are becoming more aware of fuel efficiency when they buy a car. There are many reasons for this. For one thing, on a pragmatic level, fuel prices are going up, and any way of saving money is a bonus. Also there are government incentives. Having 0 road tax is amazing, and also being able to drive in central London free of charge is great for the more cosmopolitan driver. But which car should you choose for the best performance on efficiency?

With an 85.6 miles per gallon performance, the Smart Fortwo achieves exactly what it sets out to do; top the list at all costs. You’ve got a nippy little city car in this model, and you can certainly have a clean conscience. Some other aspects of it might keep you awake at night though. It’s a loud, rattling car, so while the diesel is efficient in terms of fuel consumption it’s not giving you the impression of gliding along.

Hybrids are anther great way that cars can achieve great feul efficiency. This is where it gets hard to judge their miles per gallon too, because you’ll save a lot of fuel using the electric power around the city, but need to burn a fair amount when you’re out on the open roads. The Japanese are really pushing the hybrid technology, with the Toyota Prius coming it at around 72 mpg, and the even more impressive Honda Insight having the potential to hit the 83.10 mpg mark. And they’re nice cards to drive and look at too.

For cars with good driving capabilities and eally good efficiency it’s work looking at a couple of other diesels. The Skoda Fabia Greenline is a supermini with a nice 83.1 mpg rating, and good handing. Using the same 1.2 TDI engine, the Volkswagen Polo Blue Motion achieves 80.7 mpg, and is arguably the coolest car of this super-efficient class too.

It’s clear that there’s a bright future in more fuel-efficient cars, and these are the ones that are leading the way right now.
