There are a lot of modifications available now a days for people who wish to increase the power available form their engine. These modifications include Electric Superchargers & Turbos, which are easy to get and are reported to up the horsepower of an engine. A higher top speed and quicker, smoother acceleration can be achieving by using these devices.

Air and fuel are mixed together ignited in an enclosed space called a combustion chamber within an engine. When the mix is ignited it cause an explosion which increases the pressure within the space. A piston head is moved downwards because of this pressure. The piston is attached to a drive shaft which turns when the piston moves. Increasing the amount of air in the space is a simple way to increase the power of an engine.

The more air that it is pushed into the combustion the chamber the bigger the explosion will be. The bigger the explosion the more energy is transferred to the piston and head and the more horsepower is produced. The temperature of the air is also important as cooler air burns better than hot air.

Superchargers and turbos contain a fan which compresses air and forces more of it into the engine, this is called forced induction. As the air is compressed it gets cooler as well, adding another advantage, this is because the air moves faster and has less chance of heating up before it gets into the engine. The way the fans in the two devices are powered is what makes them differ.

Supercharges are usually powered from belts or chains connected to a gear or wheel connected to the drive shaft. An electric supercharger uses power from the car battery to drive the fan which pressurizes the air. Electric super chargers will only increase horsepower on full throttle because this is when a valve controlling the amount of air to an engine is fully open.

An electric super charger is a lot less expensive and far more easy to install than a belt or chain driven charger. A power cable attaches it to the battery and they easily add on to existing naturally aspirated air induction systems. Belt superchargers may provide higher power gains than an electric one but the electric still provides an admirable 8.5% gain in power.

A fan compressing air is also how turbos work, they however get driven by the exhaust gases of an engine rather than by the engine itself. The exhaust system has a turbine installed in it which drives the compressing fan. These are said to be more efficient because they only use waste energy from the engine to power them rather than using useful energy produced from the drive shaft.

A car can be made more powerful if the piston inside the combustion chamber is given more power because of a higher pressure created from a bigger explosion caused by having more air in the air fuel mix. This is why electric superchargers & turbos are an effective modification for increasing power.
