Is A Free Rental Upgrade Really Free

By , May 11, 2010

When renting a vehicle, many steer away from compact car rentals, as they feel that they are not willing to sacrifice luxury, or require a little more space and features. Before paying more to upgrade your car rental take a look at some of the information that is provided below.

1. GAS PRICES- Although you may look at a bigger vehicle and say that for a few dollars more, you will be able to get a car that is classy and comfortable, this is not the fact. The truth is a larger car will end up costing you a lot more, than a compact car would. When you are driving around in a larger vehicle you will be paying more money on gas, than you would in a compact. So although a few dollars more for the rental contract, it may end up being a few hundred more, when you add everything together.

2. FREE UPGRADE- Many companies will offer you a free upgrade at the time of your rental and while this may seem like a tempting offer you might be surprised to learn that your rental fee will actually go up especially if you have added features that may be more expensive on the upgraded vehicle. You may however wish to take a free upgrade if you will be only driving locally since it will have less impact if you are not driving that much.

3. PASSENGER SPACE IS NOT MUCH BETTER- Often times you think that a larger vehicle, such as an SUV, will offer you more passenger space than a compact car. The fact is, passenger space is relatively equal in both cars. The main difference in car sizes is the storage space. You should really only consider the upgrade if you think it will be hard for you, personally, to fit into a compact car (whether it be due to height or weight) or if you are taking a trip that may require a little more horsepower than a compact car can provide you.

Before renting a larger vehicle or accepting a free vehicle upgrade take a close look at your situation and determine if a larger vehicle is absolutely necessary. Although you may think it is the best choice, once you add up the total cost, including gas, you may kick yourself for getting that larger vehicle. Think carefully and choice wisely before jumping into a rental agreement.
