Gas guzzling terrain vehicles may have been popular a decade ago, but electric vehicles are stealing the show. Electric vehicles are now becoming more widely available and at affordable costs. The emerging market if electric cars is already helping the environment stay clean.

Electric cars don’t give off emissions that gasoline-powered vehicles do. The fact still remains that the electricity required to charge the vehicle battery could have been produced at a coal energy plant. Even if that were the case, however, the coal energy plant produces energy more efficiently and results in less smog than the millions of cars that use gasoline put into the air each passing year.

Electricity is cheaper than gas: you might already know this from your heating bills. It would take a couple of cents per mile to fuel an electric car under normal circumstances, whereas it can take 12 cents per mile or more for gasoline cars. This is a huge sigh of relief for car owners that hate seeing the rising price of gasoline.

Someone driving an electric car for the first time might be surprised that the vehicle makes almost no noise at all when in operation. Of course there are still sounds from the motor and the sound of accelerating and such, but it’s much less noticed than in gasoline motors. Gasoline motors cause a lot of vibrations that can contribute to a noisy and unstable ride. Electric cars are luxurious by nature thanks to the motor.

To promote the purchase of electric vehicles, governments around the world are giving tax breaks to anyone who purchases hybrids and electric vehicles. The practice is well along in the United States, where qualified purchases can get several thousand dollars in tax credits. It is a start, but not something significant enough to allow the average United States citizen to afford one.

All the selling points of the electric vehicle discussed are the high points- there are the lows as well. Electric vehicles run into the problem of generating little heat while the motor is being run. Gasoline motors are excellent at generating heat because of their design, but electric motors will take extra energy to generate heat and air conditioning. Current workarounds might demand that the owner heat or cool the car while still being charged and leave after it’s acceptable.

Final Thoughts

The time will come when electric cars dominate the automotive industry. With current lag in adoption of electric car standards, it may be a decade before the electric car can be afforded by everyone. The good news is that it’s a countdown, and not a matter of if it can happen at all.
