Glancing At The Automotive Industry
The automotive industry has taken a hit in recent months and years. With the United State Government stepping in to “bail out” a failing car industry, the general public is becoming quite skeptical about purchasing vehicles. Let’s take a look at the auto industry and see if there is something we can glean from the recent issues they have had.
The car industry is far more than just the selling of vehicles at a lot. While most of us know the location of several new car lots, there is much more to the process before the cars reach those lots. There is constant research and development going on behind the scenes as companies try to come up with designs that get better gas mileage, are more ecologically friendly and will appeal to the masses.
Early on when manufacturers were beginning to build vehicles, there was great competition among the foreign and domestic companies. Today, many of the domestic companies have morphed into partnerships with the foreign companies. Nearly every major manufacturer works in some way within and international perspective. The auto industry has succumbed to globalization, just as other industries have. From nearly every continent, there are manufacturers sending their auto parts to be put into American made products.
Currently in the global market, the emphasis in auto manufacturing is on finding a way to make electric or bio-fuel vehicles that are easier on the environment. Fiat currently has a bio-fuel vehicle that uses as much as thirty percent less fuel. That’s a lot of great gas mileage. In the United States Smith Electric Vehicles are making their name heard. They are the recent recipients of a 32 million dollar grant from the Department of Energy to try to help make the process of development faster.
With increasing costs that include the labor to build the cars and the materials to build them the cost to create one vehicle has risen dramatically. Add to that the cost to market the cars in order to convince the consumer that “mine is the best” and the budget for creating one car has reached an all time high.
Auto parts makers are different than the manufacturers themselves. While it is true that many of the larger auto manufacturers create their own parts, many of them are also out-sourced. Everything from the door handles to the car seats are manufactured outside of the auto-maker. Tires are a whole other manufacturing unit. Tire companies compete to supply the auto manufacturers with their tire, sometimes even customizing a tire for a particular vehicle. There are other rubber products like the belts and hoses under the hood that go into the economy of building a car as well.
The auto industry has also spawned another industry. That of auto repair. While it is true that dealerships have their own repair facilities, many people prefer to find an independent repair service. The dealerships tend to charge a bit more, and for customers who don’t mind paying for that extra security that is a valid option. Many consumers prefer to find shops that have ratings from “AAA”, knowing they will be fairly priced and will get the job done well.
The automotive industry is a gigantic player in the global economy. Even countries like China are becoming more and more involved in the manufacturing of cars. As the United States strives towards creating a global market for our vehicles, the automotive industry must learn to work internationally to be competitive.
